Our History -W4T-SL

The vision for Women for Tomorrow-Sierra Leone (W4T-SL) was born between 2018 and 2020 when Dr. Joseph Conteh and his wife, Mrs. Josephine Conteh, began mobilizing local women traders in the Waterloo community. They encouraged these women to participate in volunteer-led community development and self-help programs aimed at uplifting their lives and strengthening communal bonds. Through grassroots engagement and informal gatherings, the Contehs laid the foundation for what would later become a transformative women-led initiative. The idea centered around empowering women to become change agents within their communities by promoting economic self-reliance, education, and health awareness.

From 2021 to 2023, the initiative gained significant momentum as more women recognized the value of its activities and joined the movement. During this period, the group was formally registered as a community-based organization (CBO) under the Western Area Rural District. The membership steadily increased, reaching 52 registered women, all united by a common purpose—to build stronger communities through shared knowledge, skills, and leadership. This phase marked a shift from informal mobilization to structured community engagement, with women volunteering in outreach programs and grassroots interventions across various sectors.

In 2024, recognizing the potential of the organization and the need for stronger leadership and institutional growth, Dr. Conteh and Mrs. Conteh invited Mrs. Finda Fanta M’Briwa to join the initiative. A dedicated lecturer in Information Technology at the University of Sierra Leone’s Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), Mrs. M’Briwa brought a deep commitment to supporting women and girls. Known for her integrity, spiritual devotion as a Jehovah’s Witness, and passion for service, she was appointed as Executive/Country Director following the Contehs' decision to incorporate the organization as a national non-governmental organization (NGO).

In 2025, Dr. Joseph Conteh and his wife fully funded the legal and administrative process of incorporation, with active contributions and leadership from Mrs. M’Briwa, who navigated the steps required to elevate W4T-SL to a nationally recognized nonprofit organization. Today, Women for Tomorrow-SL is officially registered with the Western Area Rural District Council, the National Revenue Authority (NRA), the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO), the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED). The organization continues to grow as a beacon of hope and empowerment for women and girls across Sierra Leone.
